Today, people across the country are observing Memorial Day. Although some might see it as simply marking the beginning of barbecue season and the openings of pools nationwide, it is important to remember the true meaning of the day. Whether it is observing a moment of silence or attending a memorial service, spend a few minutes to reflect on the sacrifices made by our fallen soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and members of the Coast Guard—and their families.

For many, Memorial Day is a painful reminder of the absence of a loved one. Don’t forget the wives, husbands, sons and daughters, parents, and other loved ones—this day is about them too.

If you are looking for a way to support the families of our fallen soldiers, or know someone who is struggling with grief and loss related to the death of a service member, please visit the website for the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS). TAPS provides excellent resources for survivors and meaningful volunteer opportunities for those who seek to support them.

We in the military community are all too aware of the meaning of the phrase, “Freedom isn’t free.” On Memorial Day, that message rings even clearer.
